The Share Market and Federal Elections

19th of May, 2022

The outcome of this weekend’s federal election will be interesting to watch from an Australian share market point of view.

Historically the market doesn’t like uncertainty. So, if there is a hung parliament the market will likely be in a state of flux until the new governing party can show they can effectively govern with the support of the greens and or independents.

If either the Labor or the Coalition wins with a clear majority, then the market will have the certainty it desires and historically we can expect higher prices.

This time it might be different given the worldwide geopolitical uncertainty which will prevail until the Russia/Ukraine situation is resolved.

Either way, this is another opportunity to learn from history by watching the market unfold over the coming period.
